Shubman Gill's initial coach and father, Lakhwinder, praised his son's performance in the ongoing series against England. He also commented on Gill's return to form after a few ducks. Lakhwinder disagreed with Gill's decision to bat at No 3 despite his century in the ongoing Dharamsala Test. Gill faced mounting pressure after failing to score a fifty in 12 innings and displaying a lack of attacking play. His habit of playing with hard hands only made matters worse.
Shubman silenced his critics by scoring his maiden century in the second innings of the Vizag Test. It was a significant turnaround from his opening position to number three.
During Friday's match, Gill demonstrated his attacking skills by charging down the track to both spinners and pacers, including the legendary James Anderson. Lakhwinder is particularly pleased when his son plays the square cut and cover drive, both of which were on display at the HPCA stadium.
Despite his son's success, Lakhwinder disagrees with the decision to move him to the number three position. According to him, Shubman should have continued to open as batting in the middle order adds pressure and does not suit his game style.
But Lakhwinder respects his son's decisions and acknowledges his maturity and autonomy:
“I don’t interfere with his decisions. I just train with him. He’s old enough to make his own choices. I made decisions on his behalf only when he was a teenager.”
