SL cricket team has voiced concerns about security in England
The Sri Lanka men's cricket team has voiced concerns about security in England following recent anti-immigrant riots across several cities. In response, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has reassured Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the team about the comprehensive security measures in place.
Players already in England for pre-series training have expressed anxiety over the unrest, especially since their current security arrangements do not cover this part of their trip. This group of nine, consisting of seven players and two support staff, has requested SLC to arrange for enhanced security while they travel to and from a ground near London over the next few days.
"Most of the unrest seems to be away from where we are, but everyone is still a bit concerned," a player in England told ESPNcricinfo. "We can't really go out for dinner or do much outside the hotel. We're trying to avoid any trouble."
The player added, "We've asked the board to secure additional protection for us until the main team arrives, but we haven't received a response yet."
The main team is expected to arrive in England on Sunday for the three-match Test series. At that point, the ECB’s security plan will be fully in effect. Sri Lanka’s team manager, Mahinda Halangoda, who remains in Sri Lanka, said he had raised the issue with the ECB after seeing reports about the situation in Manchester, where the first Test will be played from August 21.
"I raised our concerns with them, and the ECB responded quickly with details of their extensive security arrangements," Halangoda said. "They will also provide a security liaison for the tour."
While some far-right protests have turned violent, recent days have seen large counter-protests aimed at defending immigrant-owned businesses, places of worship, and other community spots.
The UK government reassured sports organisations during an emergency call on Wednesday, affirming that the country remains safe for sporting events. UK police have committed to cracking down on and preventing violence.
Sri Lanka's Test series in England will begin on August 21 in Manchester, followed by the second Test at Lord's starting August 29, and concluding at The Oval on September 6.
