SL Defeats NZ Despite Ravindra's Attempts

Sri Lanka secured a 63-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test in Galle, going 1-0 up in the two-match series on Monday (September 23). Despite a fighting knock of 92 from Rachin Ravindra in the fourth innings, New Zealand's batting lineup faltered, with none of the other batters stepping up to support him. Tom Blundell and Kane Williamson both managed 30 runs, but seven Kiwi batters failed to reach double figures.

Chasing 275 for victory, Ravindra was New Zealand’s lone warrior but eventually fell to Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, who proved to be the match-winner. Jayasuriya’s brilliant spell of 5/68 in the final innings tore through the Blackcaps' lineup, dismissing key players including Ravindra, Williamson, Blundell, Glenn Phillips, and Will O'Rourke, leaving the visitors all out for 211.

Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat, posting 305 in the first innings, thanks to a century from Kamindu Mendis. New Zealand responded with 340, led by a five-wicket haul from Will O'Rourke, giving them a slender lead. However, Sri Lanka’s second-innings score of 309 set New Zealand a challenging target, and Jayasuriya’s spin dominance ensured the Kiwis fell short.

Jayasuriya, who took four wickets in the first innings, was named Player of the Match for his 9-wicket haul across both innings. The second Test is set to begin at the same venue on September 26.

Brief Scores: - Sri Lanka 305 & 309, - New Zealand 340 & 211.

Result: Sri Lanka won by 63 runs.
