Southee Steps Down as NZ Test Captain, Tom Latham to Lead Against India

Tim Southee has officially resigned as the captain of New Zealand’s Test cricket team, just before their upcoming three-match Test series against India, which begins on October 16. His decision follows New Zealand's 0-2 Test series defeat to Sri Lanka. The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) board announced on October 2 that Tom Latham would take over the Test captaincy full-time.

Southee, who led New Zealand in 14 Test matches with six wins, six losses, and two draws, took on the captaincy from Kane Williamson in 2022. Explaining his decision, the 35-year-old fast bowler stated that stepping down was in the best interest of the team, allowing him to focus on his individual performances and continue contributing as a key bowler.

"Captaining the BLACKCAPS in a format that means so much to me has been an honour and a privilege. I've always prioritised the team, and I believe this decision is what’s best for our future," Southee said in a statement. He added that his priority now is to return to form and help New Zealand win more matches by focusing on taking wickets. He also pledged full support to Tom Latham, wishing him success in his new role.

NZC CEO Scott Weenink commended Southee's selflessness, noting that his decision reflected true leadership. "Tim’s commitment to putting the team first, despite his personal disappointment, is a testament to his character," Weenink remarked.

New Zealand’s recent series against Sri Lanka ended in disappointment, with the Black Caps losing the first Test by 63 runs and the second by an innings and 154 runs, marking a tough end to Southee’s tenure as Test captain.
