Suryakumar is the new captain of the Indian team

The upcoming India vs Sri Lanka T20I and ODI series marks the beginning of a new era for Indian cricket. With Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach, the team is set on a mission to achieve more success. One of the significant changes in the lineup is the appointment of Suryakumar as the T20I captain, replacing the retired Rohit Sharma. 

Despite expectations of Hardik Pandya taking over the role, Suryakumar was chosen for the captaincy position. The decision was influenced by the players' trust in Suryakumar, as mentioned in a report by Indian Express. The selection meeting was intense with debates and differences, highlighting the importance of trust between players and their captain. 

Suryakumar's strong man-management skills and communication style akin to Rohit impressed the BCCI selectors. His efforts to retain players like Ishan Kishan and motivate fringe players earned him the captaincy ahead of Pandya. 

Pandya, known for his role in the T20 World Cup-winning squad, was informed of the decision by Agarkar and Gambhir. With Shubman Gill appointed as the vice-captain in both formats, it indicates a shift in leadership options beyond Pandya. 

Pandya's frequent injury setbacks played a role in the decision, contrasting with Suryakumar's consistent presence on the field. Suryakumar's previous success in leading the team against Australia and South Africa further solidified his position as the new captain for the upcoming series.
