Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur and seasoned batsman Ajinkya Rahane are expected to represent Mumbai in the upcoming Irani Cup, where they will face the Rest of India (ROI) team in Lucknow starting October 1. Shreyas Iyer is also likely to join the squad.
There is a possibility that Sarfaraz Khan will be released from the Indian Test squad, where he is currently included in the Bangladesh series. If Sarfaraz does not feature in the second Test, which begins on September 27, the selection committee may release him by the third day to join Mumbai for the Irani Trophy. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will make a formal request to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding his availability.
Shardul Thakur will be playing his first domestic match since recovering from foot surgery, which he underwent in London this June. Despite dealing with injury issues, Thakur had a significant impact on Mumbai's recent Ranji Trophy victory, even scoring his maiden first-class century.
The national selection committee is expected to announce the Rest of India squad on Tuesday, which will likely include players who performed well in the Duleep Trophy and other fringe cricketers aiming for a spot in the national side.
