The 94-year-old record was surpassed

England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith achieved a remarkable milestone during the current first Test against Sri Lanka at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester. He scored a brilliant century on the third day of the match, making history as the youngest English wicketkeeper to reach a Test century. At 24 years and 42 days, Smith surpassed a 94-year-old record previously held by Les Ames, who scored a century at 24 years and 63 days against the West Indies in Port of Spain in 1930.

Following his impressive feat, Smith expressed his gratitude for the guidance he received from Ian Bell, despite the former England batsman currently serving as a batting consultant for Sri Lanka. Bell, a five-time Ashes winner, had previously collaborated with Smith during the recent English domestic competition, The Hundred, and during their time with the England Lions.

"Belly has been a tremendous support to me, both with the Lions and while playing for Birmingham Phoenix over the last couple of years," Smith shared with reporters. "His insights and the extra practice he provided before the Test series were invaluable, and I'm truly thankful for that."

The 24-year-old added, "It's fantastic to have someone in your corner, even if they're on the other side. I really appreciated his assistance."

Reflecting on his performance, Smith said, "It felt amazing to achieve that milestone today. I felt relaxed and comfortable, which allowed me to just enjoy my game."

As for the match, England secured a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka on the fourth day of the Test.
