The absence of Mohammed Shami from the Duleep Trophy squad despite earlier hints from BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar about his potential return for the Bangladesh Test series has raised questions. Shami has been out of action since suffering an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup in November 2023. Following surgery in the UK in February 2024, he has been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
Shami's recent social media updates, showing him bowling at low intensity with a shortened run-up, led to speculation that he could be available for the Duleep Trophy, which kicks off on September 5. However, the BCCI ultimately decided not to rush his comeback. According to a report from PTI, Shami was not fit enough to participate in the Duleep Trophy, and the selectors did not want to risk aggravating his condition by pushing him to return too early.
Agarkar had subtly hinted that Shami could be in the mix for the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh, beginning September 19. However, with fitness being the primary concern, it appears unlikely that he will be part of the squad. The selectors are prioritising having India’s top three pacers—Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj—fully fit for the crucial five-Test series against Australia later in the year.
Shami has a stellar Test record, with 229 wickets in 64 matches, including six five-wicket hauls. While he is likely to miss the Bangladesh series, Shami is expected to make a gradual return by playing in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy fixtures starting in October, before being considered for one of the three Tests against New Zealand.
This cautious approach reflects the selectors' long-term view, ensuring Shami’s readiness for major assignments later in the year rather than risking his recovery by hurrying him back into action for the Duleep Trophy.
