Heinrich Klaasen acknowledged that while the low-scoring games in New York may not be an ideal product for global promotion, they certainly add to the competitive spirit and entertainment value for players and hardcore fans. After South Africa secured a narrow four-run victory over Bangladesh in their ICC T20 World Cup encounter, Klaasen expressed his thoughts during the post-match press conference.
When asked about the enjoyment factor for players on challenging pitches like those in New York, Klaasen emphasised that while it might not be the most marketable aspect of the game, it certainly elevates the level of competition and brings teams closer together. He noted the nerve-wracking nature of every game, highlighting the absence of easy matches, especially in their group.
Regarding the team's eagerness to progress to the Super 8 stage in the Caribbean, Klaasen humorously suggested that while the batters may be keen to leave New York, the bowlers might prefer to stay given the conditions. He expressed satisfaction with South Africa's performance in securing three wins out of three matches, despite facing tougher challenges than anticipated.
When asked about the expected par score in the West Indies during the Super 8 stage, Klaasen mentioned that a total of 160-170 would be considered competitive on Caribbean wickets.
Responding to inquiries about expanding cricket to other countries like Argentina, Brazil, and Russia, Klaasen expressed openness to the idea, highlighting the enthusiasm among cricketers for playing in various conditions worldwide.
In the match against Bangladesh, South Africa opted to bat first and posted 113/6 in 20 overs, with Klaasen and David Miller contributing significantly. Bangladesh fell short of the target, finishing at 109/7 in their 20 overs, despite a valiant effort from Mahmudullah and Towhid Hridoy.
With three wins in three games, South Africa leads Group D with six points, while Bangladesh sits in second place with two points from one win and one loss.
