The strategic importance of engaging the Indian audience

The Big Bash League (BBL) and Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) are making concerted efforts to capture the attention of the Indian cricket audience, recognising the massive potential in one of the sport's most passionate markets. Alistair Dobson, the General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, emphasised the importance of this strategy in a recent press conference, noting a significant rise in viewership from India, largely driven by a new media rights deal that has bolstered the leagues' presence across the subcontinent.

Dobson highlighted the strategic importance of engaging the Indian audience, pointing to India's cricket-obsessed population as a key target for expanding the leagues' global reach. The increased viewership from India marks a crucial milestone, making the country a vital market for both the BBL and WBBL.

Recent seasons have seen several initiatives aimed at drawing in Indian fans, including the involvement of famous Indian cricket commentators like Ravi Shastri and Harsha Bhogle. Their participation has not only enhanced the commentary experience but also attracted more Indian viewers to the leagues.

Additionally, the inclusion of top Indian women cricketers, such as Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana, in the WBBL has been a significant draw for Indian fans. These players have brought not just their talent but also a substantial following from India, further boosting the leagues' appeal in the region.

Dobson also hinted at the possibility of including more Indian cricketers in the future, recognising their impact on the league's growth and accessibility. He expressed the league's commitment to working closely with cricket boards worldwide to continue expanding and making the competition more inclusive and engaging for global audiences.

The upcoming WBBL season, set to begin on October 27 with a match between Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat at the Adelaide Oval, is likely to see continued efforts to enhance its appeal to Indian fans, making the league even more exciting and inclusive.
