The winner of the 1983 World Cup refuses to declare India as the favourites for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024

The selection of India's squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup has drawn both praise and criticism. Fans applauded the inclusion of Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, and Yuzvendra Chahal. However, they questioned the exclusion of up-and-coming talents Rinku Singh and Shubman Gill, especially Singh, who has been batting consistently for India.

Rohit Sharma was named captain, while Virat Kohli was also included after an impressive run for RCB in the 2024 IPL. Shivam Dube, Sanju Samson, and Yuzvendra Chahal have been rewarded for their outstanding IPL performances. With spin bowling expected to be crucial in the West Indies and USA, the selectors have opted for a spin-heavy attack that includes Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Chahal. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya are the pacers selected for the tournament.

Madan Lal, who won the 1983 World Cup, has expressed concern about the team's poor bowling attack:

“While Jasprit Bumrah is an exceptional pace bowler, India’s other pacers have been inconsistent, leaving the overall pace attack looking weaker. Although Siraj has shown promise at times, his performance at the international level has been inconsistent. For the pace attack to be stronger, India needs its fast bowlers besides Bumrah to find more consistency.”

Madan Lal felt that Jasprit Bumrah would be responsible for leading the team's pace attack and that India needed to select an additional seamer in the squad.

Indian Squad For T20 World Cup 2024: Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj.

Reserves: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan.
