Usman Focuses on India's Full Bowling Arsenal Ahead of BG Trophy
As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaches, Australia's opener Usman Khawaja downplayed the spotlight on Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, emphasising that India’s bowling strength extends beyond its star bowler. Though Bumrah has been formidable since his 2018 Test debut—taking 173 wickets in 40 matches, including 32 against Australia—Khawaja pointed out other Indian bowlers who could pose serious challenges. Speaking with Fox Cricket, Khawaja praised Mohammed Siraj, noting his skill against both right- and left-handed batters, and acknowledged the often "underrated" Mohammed Shami as an equally threatening force.
"Everyone talks about Jasprit, but they actually have a lot of other good bowlers," Khawaja explained. "Siraj is a very good bowler...and Shami, when fit, is excellent. Plus, their spinners complement the fast bowlers well," he added.
At 37, Khawaja expressed confidence in his approach, stating he's more focused on where he can score runs rather than being preoccupied with Bumrah. “I’m not thinking about where he’s getting me out; I’m thinking about where I’m scoring runs against him,” he asserted, adding that he would respect Bumrah's good deliveries but would capitalise on any misses.
The much-anticipated series will kick off on November 22 in Perth, with subsequent matches at iconic venues including Adelaide for a day-night Test, Brisbane’s Gabba, Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test, and the series finale at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7. The five-match series promises to be a thrilling showdown as both teams bring full-strength lineups to the pitch.
