Virat Kohli, along with Rajat Patidar (₹11 crore) and uncapped pacer Yash Dayal (₹5 crore), has been retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the upcoming IPL season. Kohli’s retention for ₹21 crore sets a record, making him the first Indian player to breach the ₹20 crore mark in the league's history. Previously, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc held similar records with ₹20.5 crore and ₹24.75 crore deals, respectively.
While Kohli’s retention was expected, RCB’s choice to release captain Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Will Jacks, and Mohammed Siraj marked a strategic shift as they look to build a strong Indian core for the 2025 IPL season. Kohli, reflecting on his journey with RCB, expressed excitement, noting that his loyalty to the franchise has spanned nearly two decades. "I never thought I would play for so many years for one team," he said.
Mo Bobat, RCB’s Director of Cricket, emphasised the significance of retaining Kohli. "Virat’s energy and commitment to high standards will inspire the new group," he shared, while also praising Patidar and Dayal for their unique skills. Bobat further highlighted the value of maintaining a strong Indian lineup, stating, "Retaining top Indian talent gives us both options and flexibility as we prepare for the auction."
With a solid Indian core and an open auction strategy, RCB aims to leverage Kohli’s leadership and experience for future success.
