Wade Announces Retirement and Transitioning to Coaching Role

Matthew Wade has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to his 13-year career with the Australian national team. The veteran wicket-keeper batsman will step away from the international stage effective immediately and will take on a coaching role during Australia’s upcoming three-match T20I series against Pakistan at home.

Throughout his career, Wade made significant contributions to Australian cricket with 97 One Day Internationals (ODIs), 92 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), and 36 Test matches to his name. He gained particular recognition for his memorable performance in the semi-final of the 2021 T20 World Cup, where his explosive 41 runs off just 17 balls, including three consecutive sixes against Shaheen Shah Afridi, led Australia to victory over Pakistan.

Reflecting on his retirement, Wade noted, "I was aware that my time with the national team was likely coming to a close after the last T20 World Cup. Discussions about retirement and coaching with George (Bailey) and Andrew (McDonald) have been ongoing." He expressed gratitude for the coaching opportunities ahead, while also committing to continue playing in the Big Bash League (BBL) and select franchise leagues during the summer.

As he bids farewell to his international playing career, Wade extended his thanks to teammates, staff, and coaches, highlighting the invaluable support that shaped his journey.
