West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has been handed a two-match suspension following an on-field incident during the series-clinching ODI win against England. Cricket West Indies (CWI) issued the penalty, citing "conduct falling short of CWI's standards of professionalism."
The incident occurred on Wednesday at Kensington Oval in Barbados, where Joseph abruptly left the field shortly after dismissing Jordan Cox in the fourth over, seemingly in protest of the field set up by West Indies captain Shai Hope. His unexpected departure temporarily left West Indies a player short until he returned to bowl in the sixth over.
CWI’s director of cricket, Miles Bascombe, commented on the decision: "Alzarri's behaviour did not align with the core values that Cricket West Indies upholds. Such conduct cannot be overlooked, and we have taken decisive action to ensure the gravity of the situation is fully acknowledged."
In the same statement, Joseph expressed regret, attributing his reaction to his intense passion for the game. "I have personally apologised to captain Shai Hope, my teammates, and the management," Joseph said. "I also extend my sincerest apologies to the West Indies fans. I understand that even a brief lapse in judgment can have a far-reaching impact, and I deeply regret any disappointment caused."
