Yadav recently shared a powerful message on his Instagram
Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav recently shared a powerful message on his Instagram story in response to the nationwide protests over the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The incident, which occurred at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has sparked widespread outrage and discussions on the urgent need for change.
In his Instagram story, Suryakumar emphasised the importance of educating men rather than solely focusing on teaching women how to protect themselves. The post read, "Protect your daughter," which was crossed out and replaced with "Educate your son." The message continued by urging people to educate "your brothers, your father, your husband, and your friends," stressing the role of societal education in preventing such heinous crimes.
Suryakumar’s post aligns with a growing movement that calls for addressing the root causes of gender-based violence by focusing on changing attitudes and behaviours among men.
Other prominent Indian cricketers like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Jemimah Rodrigues have also openly condemned the incident. Mohammed Siraj, for example, shared a message on his Instagram story that highlighted the tendency in society to blame women after cases of sexual assault, questioning, "What's your excuse this time or is it still her fault?"
Jemimah Rodrigues echoed similar sentiments by sharing a post by Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt, who expressed frustration over the persistent threat to women’s safety despite years passing since the Nirbhaya tragedy.
The solidarity shown by these cricketers underscores the importance of addressing such societal issues and promoting awareness through their influential platforms.
