Yorkshire on the Brink of Victory with Three Wickets Needed

Ben Coad shines with eight wickets in the match as the visitors eye promotion.

In a tense showdown, Glamorgan finished the day at 141 for 7, needing 255 runs to defeat Yorkshire's total of 361 and 273, which gave Yorkshire a 238-run lead. Glamorgan’s innings started with a strong push but faltered, putting them on the edge of defeat.

Yorkshire remains in a prime position for promotion alongside the already-promoted Sussex. Ben Coad, with his impressive performance, claimed his 50th wicket of the season, finishing the day with figures of 4 for 30. Despite losing Yorkshire for 273 runs, where James Harris achieved his milestone of 600 first-class wickets with a haul of 5 for 73, Glamorgan struggled to build any significant partnerships. Asa Tribe stood out for Glamorgan, notching an unbeaten 50 runs in what has been a challenging outing for the Welsh side.

To put Glamorgan under pressure, Yorkshire set an imposing target of 396 runs. Right from the start of their second innings, the morning conditions favoured the bowlers, with Jamie Harris and Andy Gorvin taking early wickets. Harris claimed the first wicket of Finlay Bean through LBW, while Gorvin dismissed nightwatchman Matthew Fisher with a clever off-cutter.

As wickets continued to tumble, Timm van der Gugten joined the fray, clean-bowling George Hill. A brief partnership between Yorkshire captain Jonathan Tattersall and Dom Bess eased nerves, taking the lead nearer to 400 before Tattersall fell LBW to debutant Ben Morris. Van der Gugten struck again to dismiss Jordan Thompson, and Yorkshire finally managed a different form of dismissal when Chris Cooke caught Bess off van der Gugten's bowling.

Harris wrapped up early for Glamorgan with a fifth clean-bowled wicket, adding to their woes as Sam Northeast and Colin Ingram quickly followed suit, leaving the lower order to salvage the innings.

Kiran Carlson sought to regain form ahead of Sunday's One Day Cup final against Somerset but fell victim to a brilliant leg cutter from Coad. Ultimately, Finlay Bean’s outstanding one-handed catch marked the demise of Mason Crane, further tightening Yorkshire’s grip on the match. As the day draws to a close, Yorkshire sits confidently, just three wickets away from triumph.
