Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has recommended that Rohit Sharma, the powerhouse opener, should continue as the captain of Mumbai Indians (MI) for another year and that Hardik Pandya should be appointed as the vice-captain for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The decision to appoint Hardik as captain has sparked discussions among fans and critics alike, following his trade from Gujarat Titans to MI.
During an interview with Star Sports, Yuvraj expressed his opinion that it would be a significant decision to remove Rohit as captain. He suggested that Hardik should be allowed to work as vice-captain to gain experience in how the franchise operates. Yuvraj acknowledged Rohit's five IPL titles as captain and emphasized the importance of continuity. Yuvraj stated that he would have included any player in the team as Hardik has been given a chance, but he would have given Rohit another season and made Hardik the vice-captain to observe how the entire franchise works.
Yuvraj also expressed his understanding towards MI's decision to appoint Hardik as captain, considering their future perspective. He acknowledged Rohit's current form and leadership as vital factors in MI's decision-making process.
While acknowledging Hardik's talent, Yuvraj believes that playing for a franchise like MI will be different from playing for Gujarat Titans. He suggested that expectations would be higher given MI's five-time IPL champion status.
Yuvraj commented on MI's first match in IPL 2024, scheduled for March 24. He mentioned that although Rohit Sharma is not the captain this year, he will lead the Indian team during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA. IPL 2024 starts on March 22, and MI, led by Hardik, will face Gujarat Titans in their opening fixture on March 24 in Ahmedabad.
