Ever since Hardik Pandya took over as captain of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024, the all-rounder has come under heavy criticism. Pandya, the former captain of Gujarat Titans, has been booed by hostile fans in every match. Amid Hardik's difficult homecoming, legendary Pakistani pacer Wasim Akram has offered his support to Pandya as he transitions into the leadership role.
Mumbai Indians supporters have often voiced their discontent with the captaincy change, while Chennai Super Kings have had a smooth leadership transition in what appears to be MS Dhoni's final season. Hardik is currently out of form. The former pacer has spoken out in favour of the beleaguered Hardik, saying that mocking the captain does not help the team.
Wasim Akram told to Sportskeeda:
“This is the issue that Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India are facing. We tend to hold onto grudges. We tell our kids how Pandya was appointed captain 20 years ago. We never move on. I believe fans should have a little composure. after all, he plays for the Mumbai Indians and can turn things around for you. It makes no sense to criticize your own player. You can be negative for a while, but then you have to move on.”
Hardik Pandya, once tipped as Rohit Sharma's successor for the Indian national team, has struggled as captain of Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2024. Pandya has been booed by fans at several venues and MI now has a 3-5 record from eight matches. The five-time champions have yet to see an outstanding performance from their captain, who has failed to deliver.
