Anil Kumble's candid reflections on England's series loss and 'Bazball’

England were beaten by five wickets by Rohit Sharma and Co in the fourth Test of the series in Ranchi.

India took a 3-1 lead in the five-match Test series. The two teams will meet for the last time in Dharamshala for the final Test of the series, starting on 7 March.

It was the first time under Brendon McCullum and captained by Ben Stokes, who introduced the Bazball approach to success in the game's longest format, that England had lost a series.

Talking about this, one of India's greatest match-winners, Anil Kumble, said that playing in India and defeating them in their own backyard is tough for other teams.

“The challenge when England came here was obvious. Bazball, or whatever ball you want to call it, playing in India and beating India here was always going to be hard. India has never lost a series at home in the last ten years. England knew that they had to be different, but their bowling attack wasn’t something that they believed would be able to penetrate India’s batting line-up.”

Many of the England players, such as Johnny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, and Joe Root, threw away their wickets to play an attacking brand of cricket. It cost England the series against India. Kumble said that players can't play every ball like that, it's not good enough for the player to state that he is going to bat only one way. Sometimes players have to hold back.

In Test cricket, players have to bat according to the situation; that is what Test cricket is all about.
