Scotland’s Charlie Cassell has etched his name in cricket history as the first bowler to take 7 wickets on his One Day International (ODI) debut. In a remarkable performance during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 match against Oman in Dundee, Cassell achieved figures of 7/21, surpassing the previous record held by South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada.
Rabada had set the benchmark in 2015 when he claimed 6/16 on his debut against Bangladesh. Fidel Edwards of the West Indies also took 6 wickets in his debut match, recording figures of 6/22 against Zimbabwe in 2003.
On Monday, Cassell made an immediate impact, trapping Zeeshan Maqsood lbw and bowling out Ayaan Khan with his very first two deliveries. He continued his impressive spell by dismissing Khalid Kail in the same over and then taking the wicket of Shoaib Khan in his second over. Cassell went on to claim the scalps of Mehran Khan, Pratik Athavale, and Bilal Khan, helping Scotland bowl out Oman for just 91 runs, a target they chased down comfortably, winning by 8 wickets.
Scotland captain Richie Berrington praised Cassell during the cap presentation prior to the match, acknowledging his return from a significant injury that had sidelined him for over a year. "You've shown remarkable resilience in coming back, and it's incredible to see how you hold yourself on the field," Berrington said.
