Mumbai Indians suffered a six-wicket defeat to Gujarat Titans in the IPL on Sunday despite important contributions from Gerald Coetzee and Dewald Brevis.
Proteas paceman Coetzee took figures of 2-27 from four overs on his IPL debut as the Titans were bowled out for 168-6, with David Miller scoring just 12 off 11 balls.
Rohit (43 off 29 balls) and Brevis (46 off 38 with two fours and three sixes) shone in Mumbai's chase with a third-wicket stand of 77, but Gujarat's bowlers hit back to restrict the opposition in Ahmedabad.
Five-time champions Mumbai needed 48 from 36 balls with seven wickets in hand before they were bowled out.
Commentators said there were close to 90,000 fans in the 132,000-seater ground.
Mohit Sharma removed Brevis, who had come on as a substitute, and then Tim David in successive overs. Fellow quick Spencer Johnson then struck twice in the 19th over to help the chase.
Sai Kishore's 13th over wicket of Rohit (43) also proved key for Gujarat.
Pandya tried to chase down the 19 runs needed in the final over, hitting a six and a four off Umesh Yadav. He was caught at third slip.
Bowling with the new ball, Pandya conceded 30 runs in three overs on his return to competitive cricket after an ankle injury.
Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah came in at the first change and bowled Wriddhiman Saha with a trademark toe-crunching yorker, finishing with figures of 3-14 from four overs to restrict Gujarat to 168-6.
His other two wickets fell to Sai Sudarshan, who top-scored with 45, and Miller.
Bumrah was ably supported by Coetzee, who joined the franchise for $602,000 in last year's auction.
