England announces squad for ODI, T20I Series

England has announced their squads for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia, featuring five uncapped players while leaving out veterans Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali. The series, which includes three T20 Internationals and five One Day Internationals, reflects a move towards grooming future talent. Among the fresh faces are Warwickshire’s batting all-rounders Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley, both making their international debuts in the T20 series. Essex batter Jordan Cox, Hampshire seamer John Turner, and Leicestershire left-arm pacer Josh Hull have also earned their first call-ups.

Hull, Bethell, and Turner have been selected for both the T20 and ODI squads. The omission of Bairstow and Moeen, both instrumental in England’s past World Cup successes, suggests a potential conclusion to their international careers. Bairstow, a key player in the 2019 World Cup victory, has played 287 matches for England across formats, while Moeen, with 298 appearances, played a pivotal role in England’s 2022 T20 World Cup win. Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim coach following Matthew Mott's departure earlier this year. The series kicks off with the first T20 match on September 11.

The exclusions of Bairstow (34) and Moeen (37) could signify the end of an era in English cricket. Despite being handed a two-year contract last October, Bairstow was dropped from the Test side earlier this summer. Moeen retired from red-ball cricket after last year’s Ashes series. Additionally, Chris Jordan was dropped, and Joe Root has been rested from the ODI squad. Saqib Mahmood returns from a lengthy injury layoff, while Brydon Carse rejoins the squad following the end of his betting ban in August.

The ODI squad also features Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, Matthew Potts, and Jamie Smith, while Liam Livingstone has been selected exclusively for the T20 series. Dan Mousley has been rewarded for his strong performances in The Hundred, and Jacob Bethell, who was part of England’s 2022 Under-19 World Cup squad, receives his first senior call-up. Jordan Cox, who was previously picked for the Sri Lanka Test squad but released, impressed with a 92-ball century for Essex in the County Championship.

England T20 Squad:

Jos Buttler (c), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Dan Mousley, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Reece Topley, John Turner

England ODI Squad:

Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Reece Topley, John Turner
