If Pant shows himself as ‘Ideal Keeper’, then team will win

Rishabh Pant, returning to Test cricket after his severe accident in December 2022, played a crucial role in India's historic victory over Bangladesh in Chennai, scoring a century in the second innings. Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell believes that Pant will once again be key for India as they tour Australia in November, highlighting the wicketkeeper's importance in Australian conditions.

"If Pant performs at his best, he’s the ideal keeper for Australia. His agility when standing back is essential for covering the large areas on both sides of the wicket, which is a must in Australia. A keeper like that not only enhances the team’s fielding but also allows slip fielders to spread out and cover more ground," Chappell wrote in his ESPN Cricinfo column.

Pant first made his mark in Australia during India’s iconic victory at the Gabba in January 2021, where he played a starring role in ending Australia's 28-year unbeaten streak at the venue, helping India win the series. Chappell anticipates that Pant will have a similar impact during the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series.

Reflecting on his return to Test cricket, Pant said after the Chennai Test, "Playing in Chennai after my injury was special. This was my first match back in this format, and it was emotional. I’m just happy to be back in Test cricket, where I belong, and to contribute again."

Chappell also praised Pant’s evolution as a wicketkeeper, particularly his significant improvement when standing up to the stumps. "Before his injury, Pant drastically improved his keeping, especially against spinners. He went from being a questionable keeper to a very good gloveman, showing great determination to work on his craft," Chappell noted.

As India gears up for their Australian tour, Pant’s form and fitness will be critical for the team’s chances in the highly anticipated series.
