India Still Has Hopes for Semi-Final

In the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, India suffered a close defeat against Australia, losing by nine runs in Sharjah on Sunday. However, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team still has a chance to qualify for the semi-finals.

India’s campaign took a hit after their loss to Australia on October 13, where the defending champions extended their winning streak to 15 matches. Despite missing their captain Alyssa Healy due to a foot injury, Australia posted 151 for eight, with Grace Harris leading the charge with 40 off 41 balls. Tahlia McGrath and Ellyse Perry contributed 32 runs each, while India’s Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma claimed two wickets apiece.

In response, India managed 142 for nine, falling short in the chase. Harmanpreet Kaur remained unbeaten with a valiant 54 off 47 balls, but her efforts weren’t enough as India collapsed in the final over, losing four wickets while needing 14 runs.

Despite the setback, India’s semi-final hopes are still alive. Their progression depends on the outcome of the match between New Zealand and Pakistan on October 14 at the Dubai International Stadium.

How India Can Still Qualify for the Semi-Finals:

- If Pakistan beats New Zealand:

   - Pakistan wins by no more than 53 runs (if batting first)

   - Or, Pakistan chases the target with no more than 9.1 overs to spare (if bowling first)

In this scenario, India would advance if Pakistan’s margin of victory is within these limits. A larger win by Pakistan would knock out both India and New Zealand.

- If New Zealand beats Pakistan:

   - New Zealand will qualify for the semi-finals alongside Australia, eliminating both India and Pakistan.
