India’s dynamic opener Shafali Verma has been excluded from the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia. This decision follows her underwhelming performance in the recent series against New Zealand, where she managed only 56 runs. Verma’s last ODI half-century dates back to July 2022, marking a prolonged dip in her form.
Off-spinner Shreyanka Patil is another notable omission. Despite her promising potential, Patil has faced repeated setbacks due to injuries, including shin splints that kept her out of the XI against New Zealand. She also dealt with a hand injury earlier this year that affected her T20 World Cup participation. D. Hemalatha, Uma Chetry, and Sayali Satgare are other players dropped from the squad that triumphed over New Zealand.
The squad, led by Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana as vice-captain, also sees some notable inclusions. Harleen Deol, who last played for India in December 2023, returns after a lengthy recovery from a knee injury sustained during the WPL. Similarly, wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh rejoins the team after missing the New Zealand series due to her Grade 12 exams.
Selectors have rewarded Minnu Mani with her maiden ODI call-up for her all-around contributions in India A's series against Australia A earlier this year. Fast bowler Titas Sadhu also returns after recovering from an injury. Sadhu made headlines last year with a stunning 4/17 against Australia in a T20I and will now have a chance to make her ODI debut.
Meanwhile, Tejal Hasabnis retains her spot after her crucial 42-run knock in the first ODI against New Zealand, which helped India recover from an early collapse. Priya Punia, who last played in a home ODI against South Africa and was part of the India A squad in Australia, also returns to bolster the batting lineup.
Series Schedule
- 1st ODI: December 5, Allan Border Field, Brisbane
- 2nd ODI: December 8, Allan Border Field, Brisbane
- 3rd ODI: December 11, WACA, Perth
The series promises to test India’s bench strength while offering a blend of experienced and emerging players. With key returns and fresh opportunities, all eyes will be on the team as they take on a strong Australian side.
