India's hopes in the Women's T20 World Cup received a major lift after New Zealand suffered a heavy 60-run defeat against Australia. The loss in Sharjah significantly bolstered India's chances of making the semi-finals, following a shaky start to their campaign.
Chasing 149 runs, New Zealand were bowled out for 88 in 19.2 overs, largely due to Megan Schutt's brilliant spell, taking three wickets while conceding just three runs in 3.2 overs. Annabel Sutherland also claimed three dismissals, further crippling New Zealand’s chase. Earlier, Beth Mooney's 40 off 32 balls had propelled Australia to 148/8 in their allotted 20 overs. For New Zealand, Amelia Kerr was the standout bowler with four wickets.
After a resounding 58-run win over India, New Zealand’s defeat against Australia dented their net run rate advantage. They now sit third in Group A with two points from two games and a net run rate of -0.050, while India, with two points from as many games, has a net run rate of -1.217.
With both India and New Zealand having two group matches left, India’s path to the semi-finals is clearer. India faces Sri Lanka next, followed by a clash with Australia. A win against Sri Lanka and a loss to Australia could still see India through if New Zealand manages only one win from their remaining games, provided India's net run rate improves. On the other hand, if India wins both matches and New Zealand loses one, the net run rate becomes irrelevant for India.
Pakistan, currently in second place, are also contenders to qualify. Tied on points with New Zealand and India, they hold a superior net run rate (+0.555) but face tough challenges ahead, with matches against New Zealand and tournament favourites Australia.
