The 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin in less than a week, with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Several IPL franchises have been affected by injuries, which may impact their plans for the tournament. Some teams will be unlucky to be without their key players for the entire duration of the league. Others will be keeping their fingers crossed and hoping that their star cricketers will return for the crucial second half of the season.
Delhi Capitals
Lungi Ngidi: the South African fast bowler who was retained by the franchise before the December auction, was ruled out due to an ankle injury sustained during the Test series against India earlier this year. He has been replaced by Australian all-rounder Jake Fraser-McGurk. Fraser-McGurk made his international debut last month.
Gujarat Titans
Mohammed Shami: India speedster recently underwent ankle surgery after sustaining an injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Shami was the leading wicket-taker last year, taking 28 scalps in 17 matches for Titans. He has been out of competitive action since the ICC event in November. GT has not yet announced his replacement.
Robin Minz: the wicketkeeper-batter from Jharkhand who made headlines last December after being signed by GT for INR 3.6 crore, is expected to miss the entire duration of IPL 2024. Rajasthan Royals
Prasidh Krishna: After undergoing surgery on his left proximal quadriceps tendon last month, India’s fast bowler has been ruled out of the entire 2024 IPL season. He had justified his INR 10 crore tag last season by picking up 19 wickets in 17 matches for the Royals.
Chennai Super Kings
Devon Conway: he will miss the first leg of IPL 2024 due to a thumb injury that he sustained during a T20I match against Australia. Devon Conway will miss the first leg of IPL 2024 due to a thumb injury that he sustained during a T20I match against Australia. He is expected to be out of action for at least eight weeks following his surgery. He was CSK's top run-getter last season, scoring 672 runs at a strike rate of 140.
Matheesha Pathirana: he took 19 wickets at an economy rate of 8.01 last season and was a revelation for CSK. However, MS Dhoni picked up a hamstring injury during the T20I series against Bangladesh last week and will be without his 'special' bowler for at least the first half of the season.
Mumbai Indians
Suryakumar Yadav: the top-ranked India T20I batter, has not yet confirmed his return date for IPL 2024 as he continues to recover from a sports hernia he suffered last December. He underwent surgery for that.
Dilshan Madushanka: the Sri Lankan pacer who was signed by Mumbai after his impressive performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, sustained a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh. As a result, he will miss the beginning of IPL 2024 after being sidelined for a few weeks.
