Steyn has withdrawn from the tournament due to personal reasons according to ESPNcricinfo.
James Franklin, a former New Zealand all-rounder, will take over as the bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024, replacing Dale Steyn. According to ESPNcricinfo, Steyn, who was appointed to the role by Sunrisers in 2022, has withdrawn for personal reasons.
Franklin, who played for Mumbai Indians in 2011 and 2012, will be coaching in the IPL for the first time. Franklin, a former left-arm seam-bowling all-rounder, will join Daniel Vettori at Sunrisers. Vettori has been appointed as the franchise's head coach for the 2023 season. The pair have previously worked together at both Middlesex (county cricket) and Birmingham Phoenix (the Hundred). Franklin has also served as a head coach at Durham and is currently an assistant coach at Islamabad United in the PSL.
Sunrisers have a strong bowling attack with a host of fast bowlers. They include Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Pat Cummins, Marco Jansen, Umran Malik, T Natarajan, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Jaydev Unadkat, and uncapped Akash Singh. The spin department includes Wanindu Hasaranga, Washington Sundar, and Shahbaz Ahmed.
Vettori and Franklin will face a tough challenge as Sunrisers finished eighth in 2022 and dropped to tenth place last year. The frequent change in leadership has been a key contributing factor to the team's regression. Tom Moody, a former Australia allrounder, was replaced by former West Indies captain Brian Lara last year, who was dropped after just one season.
Sunrisers released Kane Williamson, one of their most senior players and the franchise's leader since David Warner was released in 2021, ahead of the 2023 player auction. Williamson played for the Sunrisers for eight seasons, including their title-winning campaign in 2016. He was retained as their most expensive player in 2022. South African opener Aiden Markram has held the captaincy since last season.
