Lucknow Super Giants beat Chennai Super Kings by six wickets in the Indian Premier League on Tuesday as Marcus Stoinis' century cancelled out Ruturaj Gaikwad's century.
Stoinis scored 124 not out off 63 balls, including 13 fours and six sixes, as Lucknow made the most of dewy conditions to chase down the highest IPL total at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
Rituraj Gaikwad was 108 not out as the hosts posted 210-4 in their 20 overs. Lucknow closed on 213-4 with three balls to spare.
Stoinis' maiden hundred spearheaded the Super Giants' chase after their openers fell cheaply - Quinton de Kock for a three-ball duck and Lokesh Rahul for 16.
Stoinis then countered with a 26-ball 50, hitting six fours and two sixes. Devdutt Padikkal was a spectator at the other end, contributing just 13 runs in a 55-run partnership for the third wicket.
He was out in the 11th over and Nicholas Pooran came in to smash 34 off 15 balls. He then added a 34-ball 70 with Stoinis. Their partnership changed the game for Lucknow.
Pooran fell after the strategic interval, but Stoinis remained at the crease to finish the job with Deepak Hooda (17 not out).
It was Stoinis' maiden IPL century off 56 balls and the highest individual score in an IPL run chase.
Earlier, Gaikwad powered his way to a second IPL century off 56 balls. He hit 12 fours and three sixes in his 60-ball knock to anchor Chennai's innings after Ajinkya Rahane (1) and Daryl Mitchell (11) fell cheaply.
Ravindra Jadeja was promoted again but was caught behind for 16 runs.
Gaikwad was then supported by the in-form Shivam Dube, who made 66 off 27 balls.
Dube hit seven sixes as he put on 104 runs off 47 balls for the fourth wicket with Gaikwad to take Chennai past 200.
But it was in vain as the five-time champions lost to Lucknow for the second time this season. Chennai is now fifth on the table with eight points from eight games.
Lucknow leapfrogged Chennai into fourth place with 10 points from five wins in eight games.
