Fast bowler Shivam Mavi has faced significant challenges in his cricketing career due to persistent injuries, including four stress fractures and a Grade II knee injury. Despite this, he remains determined to maintain his pace and pursue his dream of representing India in all formats of the game. At just 25, Mavi has already had to overcome multiple setbacks, including a year-long hiatus from competitive cricket, but he approaches his recovery with a positive mindset.
In a recent interview, Mavi described the emotional toll of rehabilitation and the frustrations of regaining his rhythm after such a long absence from the field. Although his return match in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League didn't yield spectacular figures, he expressed a sense of fulfilment just from being back on the pitch. He emphasised the importance of mental resilience, quoting former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, saying, "Mai haar nahi manunga (I will not give up)."
Mavi's bond with fellow fast bowler Kamlesh Nagarkoti, who has also battled injuries, has been a source of motivation. The duo shared a commitment to not only supporting each other, but also to the dream of bowling together for India. Their training at the National Cricket Academy reignited their spirits, and Mavi acknowledged the inspiration he draws from watching their Under-19 peers succeeding at the international level.
Though he faces the physical challenges of his stature—standing at 5 feet 8 inches—Mavi is steadfast in his belief that speed is crucial to his game. He refuses to compromise on pace, recognising it as his ticket to success. To assist in his recovery, he has sought guidance from established bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, who have navigated similar injury woes.
Mavi is committed to understanding his body better to prevent future injuries, and plans to approach his training with more caution. His optimism is fueled by a desire to get back into the rhythm of competitive play and ultimately achieve his goal of excelling as a fast bowler for India.
