McCullum wants to restore Buttler's confidence

Brendon McCullum is determined to uplift a "miserable" Jos Buttler, as he takes on the role of England's all-format head coach amid a critical phase for the national white-ball team. The team's recent struggles, highlighted by two unsuccessful World Cup defences in just nine months, have put significant pressure on Buttler, who has found himself grappling with tactical missteps and personal performance issues.

Recognising that Buttler's demeanour on and off the field has shifted to a more sombre tone, McCullum aims to restore the captain's confidence and free-spirited approach that characterised his earlier playing days. "He's been a little bit miserable at times," McCullum noted. He believes that rekindling Buttler's enjoyment of the game is essential not just for the captain's own performance but for elevating the entire team's morale.

With Buttler set to miss upcoming matches due to injury, the window for McCullum to work directly with him is narrowing. However, he remains optimistic about their friendship, which he believes provides a strong foundation for effective collaboration. Unlike his relationship with Test captain Ben Stokes, which developed later, McCullum and Buttler have a pre-existing bond, enabling McCullum to better support Buttler during this challenging time in his career.

McCullum's vision extends beyond individual improvement; he wants to cultivate an environment where all players feel empowered and capable of taking risks on the field. His goal is to foster a culture where players can express themselves confidently, likening it to walking out feeling "10 feet tall and bulletproof."

Looking to the future, McCullum acknowledges the importance of creating lasting friendships and relationships within the team, aiming to ensure that Buttler's final years in international cricket are filled with enjoyment and fulfilment. McCullum is also hopeful about Stokes's potential involvement in white-ball cricket, suggesting that discussions about his future will take place, particularly regarding major tournaments.

In summary, McCullum's approach hinges on revitalising Jos Buttler and creating a positive, enjoyable atmosphere for England's white-ball cricketers as they look to reclaim their status in international cricket.
