Muzumdar aims to create a pool of 20-25 players from WPL

The head coach of India Women is particularly interested in creating a pool of fast bowlers from the WPL.

India Women's head coach, Amol Muzumdar, views the ongoing WPL 2024 as an opportunity to expand the team's resources.

During his commentary on the game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Giants on Tuesday evening, he stated that he would like to create another pool of 20-25 players to strengthen the Indian team's bench. Four fast bowlers played in the last series, and he wants to create a pool of fast bowlers from the WPL. Strengthening the bowling attack can make a significant difference.

Muzumdar became head coach in late 2020, just before the home series against England and Australia. India won each of the one-off Tests against them but lost all the white-ball series. This included a 2-1 scoreline in the T20I series against England and Australia, as well as a 3-0 defeat from Australia in the ODIs.

In the white-ball matches, Renuka Singh, Titas Sadhu, and all-rounders Pooja Vastrakar and Amanjot Kaur played. Meghna Singh was also in the Test squad, but she did not get to play. With Jhulan Goswami's retirement in 2022 and the experienced Shikha Pandey's apparent departure, India's pace attack may feel lighter. Shikha Pandey briefly made a comeback in T20Is in early 2023 but has not played any recent games.

Muzumdar praised the talents of players like Saika Ishaque and Shreyanka Patil, who have the potential to progress through the WPL pathway and secure a permanent spot in the Indian team. He also commended Sajeevan Sajana, who hit a first-ball six on the last ball of the game to secure a win for Mumbai Indians in the opening game of the WPL.

Muzumdar believes that Sajana's performance highlights the depth of talent in Indian cricket.

Satheesh Shubha is a Karnataka batter who earned a national cap without requiring the WPL. She made her debut in a Test match against England and scored a highly composed half-century. Unfortunately, she missed the game against Australia due to an injury. Muzumdar discovered her during a warm-up match before the home season and promptly decided to include her in the international team.

He said:

"I organised a match at the NCA here at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. It was a four-day warm-up match and she (Shubha) did very well there - she scored 99 and 50. She's a left-hander and bats well at No. 3. After seeing her in the nets I had decided to bat her at No. 3. Not many players had seen her at the time."

Muzumdar stated that India conducted a camp prior to their two most recent assignments, with a particular emphasis on fitness and fielding.

After five games in the second season of the Women's Premier League (WPL), Muzumdar was pleased to see runs being scored by some of the Indian batters, including S Meghana (RCB), Richa Ghosh (RCB), and Shafali Verma (Delhi Capitals).

Harmanpreet had stated that uncapped players could use the WPL as a platform to break into the Indian squad, with the T20 World Cup taking place in Bangladesh in September-October.
