Punjab Kings beat Chennai Super Kings by 7 wickets at the Chepauk stadium

Punjab spinners Rahul Chahar and Harpreet Brar smothered Chennai Super Kings' batsmen to lead the Kings to a seven-wicket win in the Indian Premier League on Wednesday.

Chahar and Brar didn't concede a boundary and picked up four wickets for just 33 runs in their eight overs to restrict Chennai to 162-7 after captain Ruturaj Gaikwad lost his ninth toss in 10 matches and Punjab opted to field.

Punjab reached 163-3 with 13 balls to spare for their fourth win of the season as Jonny Bairstow (46) and Rilee Rossouw (43) led the chase against a depleted Chennai pace attack in dewy conditions.

Despite the defeat, Chennai remain fourth on 10 points, ahead of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals. Punjab are seventh with eight points.

Chennai fast bowler Richard Gleeson, playing his first IPL match, made an early breakthrough when he took a leading edge off Prabhsimran Singh (13) in his second over.

Bairstow, who smashed an unbeaten century in Punjab's record-breaking 261-run chase against Kolkata Knight Riders last week, and Rossouw then put on a 64-run stand as both spinners - Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali - struggled with heavy dew.

Both batsmen fell in the space of three overs when Shivam Dube deceived Bairstow with a slow cutter and took a thick edge and Rossouw missed a full toss from Shardul Thakur and was clean bowled.

Captain Sam Curran (26 not out) and Shashank Singh (25 not out) put on a half-century stand to guide Punjab home.

Earlier, Chennai didn't lose a wicket in the powerplay for the first time this season as Gaikwad (62) hit his fourth half-century of the season and Ajinkya Rahane (29) put on a 64-run stand.

Left-arm spinner Brar took two wickets in successive balls as Rahane's slog swept straight to deep mid-wicket and Dube was run out leg before wicket while going for a big shot against the spinner.

Chahar's impeccable leg-spin continued to confuse the Chennai batsmen as he had Jadeja (2) lbw off a sharp delivery before bowling the veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni confidently in the penultimate over, which lasted just three runs.

Gaikwad brought up his half-century in the 16th over, the first six of Chennai's innings, smashing Curran over mid-on before being bowled by Arshdeep Singh (1-52) off a yorker.
