MS Dhoni advised CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to control the over rate from the start of the LSG chase. However, Ruturaj failed to follow the suggestion, resulting in the team being two-over short at the end of the allotted time. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will impose a fine of INR 12 lakh. Chennai had to place four instead of five fielders outside the third-yard circle in the 18th over, but this was of little consequence as the team had no realistic chance of winning the contest.
This was the first match in the Indian Premier League’s history in which the captains of both teams were found guilty of an over-rate offence. Lucknow captain KL Rahul was unable to complete the overs in the allotted time, resulting in LSG being one over short when calculations were made.
Meanwhile, Dhoni signalled Ruturaj to instruct the bowlers to accelerate their pace, as they were taking a considerable amount of time to bowl six balls in the powerplay overs. MSD also informed Gaikwad that Lucknow leader KL Rahul was deliberately prolonging the process before facing a ball. The umpires were informed about KL’s actions, and Ruturaj also went to his opposite number to urge him to prepare a little earlier.
LSG had a successful outing, defeating Chennai by eight wickets to register their fourth win in the 17th season. Rahul was named the Player of the Match for scoring 82 runs and his excellent work as a wicketkeeper. His opening partner, Quinton de Kock, scored 54 runs and contributed over 100 runs with his captain.
Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja’s fifty and MS Dhoni’s cameo helped the defending champions to achieve 176/6 in 20 overs.
