South Africa lost Afghanistan in Sharjah.
South Africa's total of 106 is now the lowest ever against Afghanistan by any of the initial eight Full Member teams in ODIs. Afghanistan previously bowled out Zimbabwe for under 100 runs three times and dismissed Ireland for 100 exactly. The next lowest score against Afghanistan by a Full Member side is 149, achieved by West Indies in Gros Islet in 2017.
South Africa experienced an unusual collapse, losing 7 wickets within the first 10 overs, marking the first time they have lost this many so early in an ODI match. Their previous worst was losing their seventh wicket by the 13th over against India last year in Johannesburg.
The match also saw South Africa reach 36 for 7 runs, the lowest score they have ever recorded at that stage in an ODI. This marked the first instance they lost seven wickets before reaching 50 runs, with their previous record occurring in 2002 against Australia at exactly 50.
When batting first, South Africa's total of 106 ranks as one of their lowest ever with only 2 totals lower. Their worst innings were 83 versus England at Trent Bridge in 2008 and 99 against India in Delhi in 2022.
The top six batsmen for South Africa collectively managed just 32 runs – the lowest combined score ever recorded by them in ODIs when all top-order batsmen have been dismissed. Their previous low was 45 runs against Australia in Sydney in the 1993-94 season.
Wiaan Mulder had a remarkable performance, scoring 52 runs and coming in at a precarious 29 for 5. This was Mulder's first fifty in 43 innings of international cricket. South Africa’s total of 106 is the second-lowest all-out score in ODIs that includes a player scoring a fifty, with the record being their own 101 against Pakistan in the 1999-00 season, where Herschelle Gibbs scored 59.
Fazalhaq Farooqi achieved a milestone by taking his 102nd international wicket, becoming the third Afghan seamer to reach 100 wickets, after Dawlat Zadran and Gulbadin Naib. He claimed this feat by dismissing South Africa's captain, Aiden Markram, during the match.
