Sharma Poised to Surpass Sehwag’s Sixes Record for India

Rohit Sharma is on the brink of achieving several key milestones as India prepares to face Bangladesh in a two-match Test series, with the first Test set to begin at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on September 19. As the Indian captain, Rohit will be eager to lead from the front both with his leadership and his bat, as he continues his strong form in the ongoing World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle. Having already accumulated 700 runs in nine matches at an impressive average of 46.66, including three centuries and three fifties, Rohit is currently the 12th highest run-scorer in the cycle, with Joe Root leading the tally at 1398 runs.

Rohit recently made headlines by surpassing former captain MS Dhoni to become India’s second-highest six-hitter in Test cricket during the Rajkot Test against England earlier this year. He now sits at 84 career sixes, eclipsing Dhoni’s 78. However, he is just six sixes away from surpassing the iconic Virender Sehwag, who holds the Indian record with 90 sixes in Test matches. If Rohit hits seven sixes during the series against Bangladesh, he will become India’s top six-hitter in Test cricket.

Looking ahead, Rohit also has the opportunity to be the first Indian to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket. Globally, only three players—Ben Stokes (131), Brendon McCullum (107), and Adam Gilchrist (100)—have reached this milestone in red-ball cricket.

In addition to his Test achievements, Rohit has been making waves in international cricket. During the T20 World Cup 2024 in June, he became the first player to smash 600 sixes in men’s international cricket, and he now boasts a total of 620 sixes across formats.

Rohit is also closing in on another historic milestone—his 50th international century. Currently sitting at 48 hundreds, he is on the verge of entering the prestigious top 10 list of most centuries in international cricket. He could also become only the third Indian batter to score 50 or more hundreds, joining the elite company of Virat Kohli (80) and Sachin Tendulkar (100).

Additionally, Rohit is just 10 runs away from reaching 1000 international runs for 2024. With 990 runs at an average of 45 from 20 matches this year, including three centuries and six fifties, Rohit is set to become the fastest captain to achieve this feat in 2024.
