Sunrisers Hyderabad secured their first victory in IPL 2024, defeating Mumbai Indians by 31 runs

Batting records were broken during the Indian Premier League match between Hyderabad Sunrisers and Mumbai Indians on Wednesday. The match saw a record-breaking 523 total runs being scored in a Twenty20 game.

Hyderabad achieved a total of 277-3, the highest in IPL history, thanks to an electrifying unbeaten 80 off 34 balls by Heinrich Klassen. Travis Head (62) and Abhishek Sharma (63) also contributed with blistering half-centuries.

Hyderabad's total of 246-5 is the third-highest in the history of men's T20 and broke Royal Challengers Bangalore's IPL record of 263-5, scored against Pune Warriors in 2013.

The teams combined to hit a T20 world record of 38 sixes.

Mumbai's top-order batters were ruthless in the run-chase, with little cameos before Hyderabad came back strongly through skipper Pat Cummins (2-35) and Jaydev Unadkat (2-47) in the second half, restricting the five-time champions.

Rohit Sharma (26) and Ishan Kishan (34) brought Mumbai to their half-century mark in the first three overs. However, they both fell in successive overs while attempting to hit big shots.

Tilak Varma, the top-scorer, made 64 off 34 balls, and Naman Dhir (30) then formed an 84-run partnership. Unadkat and Cummins managed to slow down the scoring rate by forcing both batters to miscue their big shots.

Tim David scored an unbeaten 46 off 22 balls, but Hyderabad maintained control during the death overs in a match where bowlers were hit for plenty.

Earlier, 17-year-old South African fast bowler Kwena Maphaka made his IPL debut but conceded 66 runs. Maphaka's compatriot Gerald Coetzee (1-57) was also hit as Hyderabad's batters dominated the pacers from the beginning.

Mumbai's attempt to hold back their ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah (0-36) did not work out well. Head smashed an 18-ball half-century, and Sharma raised the bar by compiling his fifty in just 16 balls on a perfect batting wicket.

The South African duo of Klassen and Aiden Markram (42 not out) continued the acceleration with an unbeaten partnership of 116 off just 55 balls. Klassen hit seven sixes and four boundaries in his powerful knock, setting the stage for Hyderabad's first win of the season.
