The bowler Shami is concerned about his health

India's fast bowler Mohammed Shami is prioritising his complete recovery from an ankle injury before making his return to international cricket. The 34-year-old last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, after which he underwent surgery and has been sidelined.

At the annual awards ceremony of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Shami expressed his eagerness to return, saying, "I'm working hard to make a comeback soon because I've been out for quite a while. But I need to ensure there’s no discomfort upon my return. My focus is on getting fit to avoid any setbacks."

He emphasised the importance of a strong comeback, stating, "Returning in top shape is crucial. I don't want to rush back and risk another injury, whether it’s against Bangladesh, New Zealand, or in the Australia series. While I've started bowling again, I won’t take any risks until I’m fully fit."

According to reports, Shami is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is likely to return to competitive cricket for his domestic team, Bengal, in the upcoming Ranji Trophy, with a possible international return during the Test series against New Zealand. He is expected to participate in one or both of Bengal's matches against UP on October 11 and Bihar on October 18.

Shami also indicated he might play domestic cricket to assess his fitness. "If I need to play domestic matches to gauge my readiness, I will do so. What’s most important is that I am fully prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead, regardless of the opponent or the format," he said.

As India gears up for the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Shami is anticipated to play a vital role. "We are the favourites; they should be the ones worried," he added confidently.
