The central contracts of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan have not been terminated by BCCI

Multiple media outlets have reported that Ishan Kishan's and Shreyas Iyer's central contracts with the BCCI have been terminated, but this is not accurate. A contract is terminated in the middle of the season, not at the end of the period. Ishan and Iyer were included in the previous year's list but have not been included in the newly announced contracts.

The correct term would have been 'dropouts', i.e. no new contracts have been on offer. Both players were expected to be part of the group of centrally contracted players, given their performances and stature. The board was forced to take stern action after they refused to play in the Ranji Trophy.

The left-handed batsman had six matches to play for Jharkhand, but despite India’s head coach Rahul Dravid’s statements, he chose to remain absent. Even after the BCCI’s stern stance, Ishan didn’t respond and continued to train with Hardik Pandya.

Iyer played in the first two Tests against England but failed to score big and was subsequently dropped. Later, he feigned a back injury to avoid playing in the Ranji Trophy matches, but was caught by the medical staff of the NCA.

Meanwhile, Iyer has learned a valuable lesson and will represent Mumbai in the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy. Unfortunately, Ishan will not have the same opportunity as Jharkand failed to qualify for the knockouts.

Kishan is set to play for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League 2024. It appears that neither of them will be selected for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, even if they perform well in the league.
