The Up Warriorz achieved a stunning 7-wicket victory over the defending champions Mumbai Indians in the WPL 2024

In Match No.6 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024, UP Warriorz defeated defending champions Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

Vrinda Dinesh, who had failed to impress against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (DC), was injured while fielding and ruled out of batting. The Warriorz made a masterstroke by picking Kiran Navgire as the second opener alongside Alyssa Healy.

The run rate was reduced to 7.21. Navgire scored 57 runs off 31 deliveries, hitting 6 fours and 4 sixes, as the Warriorz added 61 runs in the powerplay while chasing a total of 162.

Healy scored 33 runs off 29 balls and formed a 94-run partnership for the opening wicket with Navgire in 9.1 overs.

In the span of 2 overs, Navgire, Healy, and Tahlia McGrath were dismissed.

Issy Wong removed McGrath and Healy.

Nevertheless, Grace Harris and Deepti Sharma added an unbeaten 65 runs to secure the win for the Warriorz with 21 balls to spare. Harris remained unbeaten on 38 off 17 balls, hitting 6 fours and a six, while Deepti managed 27 off 20 balls.

Matthews' return to form for Mumbai Indians

Earlier, Mumbai Indians scored 161/6 in 20 overs. Hayley Matthews top-scored with 55 runs, including 9 fours and a six. She shared a 50-run partnership with Yastika Bhatia, who contributed 26 runs.

Amelia Kerr scored 23 off 16 balls before being dismissed by Deepti.

Pooja Vastrakar and Issy Wong scored 18 and 15 runs respectively. This was the first win for the UP Warriorz in WPL 2024, placing them in fourth position. MI are currently in second place, but their net run rate has dropped to -0.182.
