Former England captain Eoin Morgan has denied speculation that he is a contender to succeed Matthew Mott as the white-ball coach for the England cricket team. Mott has faced criticism following England's inability to defend their world titles, which has heightened the scrutiny on his position.
On July 23, Tuesday, Morgan addressed the rumours, discounting any suggestion that he might step into Mott's role. England's disappointing performance in India during the ODI World Cup last year, coupled with a semi-final defeat to India in the T20 World Cup 2024, has intensified pressure on Mott.
Media reports in the UK have indicated that Mott may leave his position, prompting the England team to explore potential replacements. Although Morgan’s name has surfaced among the candidates, he quickly shot down these claims. Speaking to Sky Sports while covering The Hundred, he remarked that he was unaware of such speculation.
"This news is actually news to me," Morgan stated. "It's tough when a coach is under criticism and speculation about their future arises, but only time will reveal what happens next."
While Morgan expressed his aspiration to coach the team in the future, he emphasised that the current period is not the right time for him. The former captain noted his responsibilities to his young family, which takes priority.
"I’ve been frequently asked by the media over the past several months whether I would consider the role. My response has consistently been that the timing in my life isn’t right at the moment. Yes, I have an interest in coaching eventually, but for now, I want to focus on my family and enjoy watching cricket through my commentary role. I’m truly enjoying what I’m doing," Morgan shared.
Rob Key, the managing director of England Cricket, has mentioned that a review of the team’s performance during the T20 World Cup will take place in the coming weeks, indicating that the process is already in motion. This situation adds to the pressure faced by Mott and the England captain, Jos Buttler, who is currently recuperating from a calf injury.
