Will Kohli and Sharma participate in the DT?

The upcoming Duleep Trophy, which heralds the start of red-ball cricket in the domestic season, will showcase a blend of established Indian stars and emerging talents vying for the top spot. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 5, 2024, in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, and at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Popular Indian batters such as Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, among others, are set to participate in the 2024-25 season of the Duleep Trophy. However, notable absences will include iconic players Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma.

Recently, former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina expressed that star players should have participated in the Duleep Trophy, as it would have been beneficial for their preparations ahead of an important Test series. Raina remarked, "Yes, they should've played. We haven't engaged in red-ball cricket since the IPL concluded. With a crucial Test series approaching, it's essential to play four-day matches and acclimate to how the pitch will behave on Day 4. I believe they're mature enough and can regroup for a few days to start practising. Family time is also important at times."

India is set to face Bangladesh in a two-match Test series commencing on September 19. Raina emphasised that Bangladesh should not be underestimated, citing their strong bowling attack as a challenge as India prepares for this series, which he views as a precursor to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

In comments to ANI, Raina noted, "A team for the Tests will be formulated now. Having top players participating in the Duleep Trophy is a commendable initiative by the BCCI. Playing red-ball cricket offers invaluable experience."

He further cautioned, "You cannot afford to take Bangladesh lightly, as they possess an excellent spin bowling attack and several players who have consistently performed well. This series will serve as excellent match practice as we gear up for the tour to Australia."

Additionally, Legends League Cricket is set to take place in India and Qatar from September 11 to October 5 of this year.
